Georgia's Vanishing Coast - Illustration by Zach Meyer

Georgia’s Vanishing Coast: With stronger storms, higher tides, and rising sea levels, how high will the water go?

On the Georgia coast, which spans 100 miles between Savannah and St. Marys, two things have become apparent during the last decade: Climate change is coming, and it’s already here. If the last decade’s increased tidal flooding initiated a conversation about the changing sea, the hurricane double-header of 2016 and 2017 added a couple of exclamation points. But while the effects of storms will be more severe with climate change, Georgia’s vulnerability to them isn’t new.
Renewable Energy

Atlanta leaders want to power the city with 100 percent clean energy by 2035. Can it be done?

Can a growing urban center of Atlanta’s size really part ways with fossil fuels in the next 17 years? Yes, experts say. But it won’t be easy. It'll take a combined effort with local businesses and energy providers such as Georgia Power, the state’s largest utility and the sole electricity provider for metro Atlanta.

Inspired by Gullah culture, this Roswell firm builds houses that are ecofriendly and chic

Simone du Boise and Denise Donahue developed a model called the EcoCraft Hybrid Home, which aims for “Net Zero Energy”—a building that consumes no more energy than it produces. In a Cadmus prototype, solar panels heat 80 percent of the household’s hot water and fuel at least 50 percent of required electricity (new technology may soon capture even more energy).

High-tech tree hugging: Meet Mother Nature Network’s data-savvy president

If, as Bill Gates famously declared of the Internet, content is king, then people like Matt Crenshaw are its field marshals. The president of Atlanta-based digital news outlet Mother Nature Network spends his time parsing web traffic trends, search engine performance, and social media engagement to help MNN.com and its sister site, TreeHugger.com, capture a combined 10 million unique visitors per month.

Mother Nature’s Daddy

God created the world in six days. Joel Babbit created Mother Nature Network in one. The concept of an environmental website aimed at mainstream audiences had been germinating in his mind for some time. And the hiring, designing, building—that would take months. But the real genesis of MNN, as it’s called, occurred between lunch and dinner, when the longtime advertising executive secured $10 million in startup funds from a handful of powerful friends on the brink of a global recession.
