Atlanta is a city on the rise, always reaching for more and the next. That’s evident in the city’s economic growth, business innovation, and how it attracts the best and brightest talent from around the country. Thanks in part to challenges like GIVE Atlanta, it’s also a hotspot for generosity.

At the core of the group’s work is the conviction that a suffering dog isn’t always the victim of willful neglect or malice—sometimes a pet’s owner simply isn’t aware of the harmful side effects or doesn’t have the resources to properly provide for it.

Furkids was born out of a need for adoption and no-kill shelter options in the metro Atlanta area after Shelton came across a cat family outside her home in 2001. She started volunteering at a PetSmart in 2002 and organizing adoptions out of the Perimeter store.

Throughout metro Atlanta, about 5,000 nonprofits strive to make their communities stronger. Helping out can be as simple as tutoring from your office computer or as deep as committing to a long-term mentorship. Whether your priority is the cause, the location, or the schedule, here are some worthwhile organizations that depend on volunteers.
