Yesterday we got a sneak peek of the High Museum’s eagerly anticipated show “Girl with a Pearl Earring: Dutch Paintings from the Mauritshuis,” which opens Sunday and runs through September 29. As museum director Michael Shapiro noted, Johannes Vermeer’s Girl arrived with thirty-four of her best friends—works by seventeenth-century Dutch masters such as Frans Hals, Jan Steen, and, of course, Rembrandt van Rijn.
On her current world tour, she travels incognito, with only her closest handlers aware of her true identity. In Japan last year, she attracted more than a million fans. In San Francisco this spring, she demanded strategically placed soft lighting befitting an icon of a certain age.
