Michael Nilan has never been one to overlook a great idea. In 2010, while on a business trip to China, the entrepreneur stumbled across a plant that produced paper without using a single tree. Inspired, Nilan shuttered his old business, which outsourced jobs for American companies like Tropicana and Westinghouse, and cofounded Atlanta-based TreeZero, which produces and distributes tree-free paper to both consumers and organizations.
Atlanta and San Francisco rarely share top billing in any kind of ranking, but when it comes to electric car sales, the ATL is second only to the City by the Bay. San Franciscans may adopt the energy-saving cars thanks to do-gooding environmentalism (and California’s high gas prices), but Atlantans choose the vehicles for decidedly more pragmatic reasons: hefty tax incentives, cheap electricity, and—most alluring to many—permission to drive solo in the HOV lane.
The green cosmetics industry is booming, projected to top $13 billion globally by 2018. The Atlanta market is no exception, even though eco products tend to cost more and have a shorter shelf life.
