Unlike some Southern cities, where development has erased neighborhoods and stories, Jacksonville has retained its charm. Every time I drive here, I feel my blood pressure drop, and I’m hungry to explore. It took decades for me to get to this First Coast of Florida, and now that I’m here, I’m not sure I want to leave.

Although it’s the largest city by area in the continental United States (840 square miles), Jacksonville manages to feel small. Venture beyond the urban core, and you’ll discover a patchwork of historic neighborhoods.

Derek Trucks, the cofounder of Tedeschi Trucks Band—which he formed in 2010 with his wife, musician Susan Tedeschi—has strong family ties to Georgia. His uncle, Butch Trucks, was one of the founding members of the Allman Brothers Band, and Derek played with the reunited ABB from 1999 to 2014.
