As our nation mourns the passing of Congressman John Lewis, we wanted to give Atlantans an opportunity to share their personal John Lewis stories. Share your favorite Lewis story, and we’ll compile and publish as many as we can in a future article.

A civil rights legend and representative of Georgia’s 5th District since 1987, John Lewis served his Atlanta constituents and the nation as the “moral conscience of Congress.” Lewis died on July 17, 2020 at age 80.

Because the documentary explores John Lewis’s life, it is also, by necessity, a contemplation of heroism and sacrifice, by people like him who came from the humblest of origins.

If you live in Atlanta, you probably have a John Lewis story. Maybe you sat next to him on a flight or gave him a hug at a festival. We want to hear your stories.

This is only the beginning.” Elected to the House in 1986, Lewis began his 17th term in January.

Publications as geographically and ideologically diverse as the Guardian, Fox News, Variety, the Hill, and others ran stories or segments about Oprah Winfrey’s campaign appearances with Democratic gubernatorial candidate Stacey Abrams. Yet regardless of the depth of coverage, the two events held in auditoriums in the Atlanta suburbs likely impacted the local crowds in a much deeper way than what could be conveyed to national viewers.
