Niko Rigney and Jon Boykin knew they wanted to marry their affinities for Japanese wabi-sabi, Scandinavian design, street art, punk rock, and gaming (both the video and board varieties) in their new three-story townhouse in Reynoldstown. But pulling it off in an elevated fashion was a different matter.

When Heidi Woessner and her husband, Jason Williams, bought the Westside lot, it was just a sloping plot of weeds with a cinderblock house. But the Howell Station neighborhood, sandwiched between West Midtown shops and the future Westside Park at Bellwood Quarry, has become a hot intown haven.

Year-round, Tammy and Christopher Weiser and their two boys head to this porch addition, since it’s able to accommodate all seasons with a fireplace, ceiling fan, and relaxing swinging bed. Interior designer Kate Hayes, who supervised the remodel, offers advice on designing an outdoor space.

"Context is important," says Kate Hayes, who designed this entryway and parlor. "The Old Fourth Ward is an interesting neighborhood, because you have these modern homes being built, but it's a neighborhood with rich history that's important to acknowledge."
