Jekyll Island’s turtle hospital drove its 90 patients to Atlanta to keep them safe from Hurricane Dorian
When a mandatory evacuation was announced for the Georgia coast during Hurricane Dorian, the Georgia Sea Turtle Center loaded up and drove its 90 turtle patients, including four loggerhead sea turtles, from Jekyll Island to Atlanta’s Georgia Aquarium.
Every year from around mid-May to the end of July, loggerhead sea turtles amble up Georgia beaches in the middle of the night to lay their nests. Around two months later, the tiny hatchlings emerge, making their way to the ocean guided by the reflection of moonlight.
Beginning this month, typically in the dead of night, pregnant sea turtles weighing as much as a Falcons lineman will emerge from the Atlantic Ocean, spend an hour digging holes with their rear flippers on the beaches of Georgia’s barrier islands, deposit a hundred or so eggs, repack the sand, and head back into the ocean.
