This spring, designer Melanie Turner released her first book, Inviting Interiors. We chatted with her about a color that appears in much of her work.

When it was time to select furnishings, Melanie Turner had an inspiration: Let’s use the color plum as a motif throughout the house, as a playful reference to the homeowners’ last name, Plumb. Shades of plum appear in window treatments, pillows, and upholstery.

With its classic symmetry and three rear gables, this 8,000-square-foot English home evokes Long Island’s North Shore.

When creating a room, the whole is always greater than the sum of its parts, stresses interior designer Melanie Turner. “Not everything needs to match,” she says. For a Buckhead home that she helped build in 2009, she devised a kitchen that is equal parts rustic and glamorous, steel and brass, modern and traditional.

Since launching her eponymous design firm three years ago, Melanie Turner has twice been ADAC’s Southeast Designer of the Year. We peeked inside the fashionista’s Buckhead closet.
