That a 1980s contemporary house in Buckhead would be renovated instead of razed is notable, perhaps signaling a growing enthusiasm for the style in the city. It was with that energy that Atlanta Magazine’s HOME displayed its second annual Modern Style showhouse in June, joining in on the reimagination of a contemporary gem.

Interior designer Tim Hobby has admired this contemporary stunner in his Ansley Park neighborhood since before it was completed in 2014. Set on a half-acre lot that was previously home to an apartment building, the house was designed by the cutting-edge architecture team Cara Cummins and Jose Tavel of TaC Studios.

When Modern Atlanta launched its home tour in 2007, it gave metro residents a chance to consider a design aesthetic outside of Craftsmans and Cape Cods. Since then the city has embraced contemporary architecture like never before.

Antimodern sentiment has practically vanished as the region’s attitude toward unconventional architecture has finally begun to shift. Although Atlanta is stocked with ranch-style, midcentury modern homes, locally the modern trend experienced a long lull beginning in the 1980s.
