Michelle Malone’s new album, Southern Comfort, features five songs cowritten with Dean Dillon, anchored by “I Choke on My Words.” It was the second tune she wrote with him. Malone envisioned it as a humorous look at the crazy things she did in her youth, sparked by longtime fans who sometimes remind her of past antics.

Thursday’s show delivered on everything Lake Street Dive fans have come to expect over the years: Rachael Price’s bright vocals are as dazzling as ever, bassist Bridget Kearney is still turning her upright into a get-down jam machine, and five minutes is enough time to convey just how much this group still loves each other. That’s no small feat for a bunch of freakishly talented musicians, most of whom met in college twenty years ago.

Music was my entree into the arts. I was six years old when Elvis Presley’s jump blues version of “Your Cheatin’ Heart” came on the car radio one afternoon. I vividly remember leaning forward and turning up the volume because I’d never heard anything like that: the swinging bass by Bill Black, the blues-flavored guitar played by Scotty Moore.
