Here's my friend and former colleague Creative Loafing News Editor Scott Henry talking Newt on MSNBC last night. Scott has had his eye on Newt the 1990s, when Newt represented Cobb County in Congress and Scott was a reporter at the Marietta Daily Journal. Them was the olden days.

Last summer, a Christian conservative group called The Family Leader asked GOP candidates to sign a so-called marriage vow. The vow is a essentially a pledge to support Christian conservative political initiatives related to issues like marriage and abortion.

Full disclosure: I did not watch Saturday's GOP debate. I'm trying to watch as many Breaking Bad episodes as I can on Netflix streaming before it disappears. I wonder if Atlanta magazine would have hired me if they knew I was addicted to meth-based fiction.

Guess who's also stunned by Newt Gingrich's rise to the top of the GOP Presidential polls? Newt himself. He recently spoke to Newsweek about what it describes in the headline as his "stunning" comeback.

For his GOP rivals, attacking leader of the pack Newt Gingrich isn't a matter of trying to find a weakness. He has approximately one zillion of them. The trick is figuring out which weakness is going to resonate with Republican voters who already know at least a little bit about Newt's flaws, but have decided they like him anyway.

With Herman Cain's campaign, um, suspended, the race for the GOP nomination increasingly looks like it's down to three men: Newt Gingrich, Mitt Romney and the old Mitt Romney who is on videotape disagreeing with every major position espoused by the current Mitt Romney.

Better hope Newt sent a gift basket (or something nice from Tiffany?) to Herman Cain. By stepping out of the race, the Atlantan and former pizza king directed a GOP surge Gingrich's way. A New York Times/CBS News poll declares Newt the front runner in Iowa. A Washington Post/ABC News poll reached the same verdict.

Last night I watched the first part of a documentary about the Great Depression. The story of irrational exuberance, poor governance, market fetishism, and sleazy banking that led up to the October 1929 market crash might as well have been the story of 2007 and 2008. The main difference was that people in 1929 seemed to dress better than we do.

As Herman Cain's performance art project/campaign goes the way of last night's pizza box, this blog is shifting its attention to Georgia's other big political gift to the current presidential campaign: Newton Leroy Gingrich.
