MASS Collective combines science with art for creative results

Expect surprises when you elevate something to an art and get it down to a science at the same time. The creative collective MASS—an acronym of Music, Art, Science, and Social—unites two demographics who usually do not sit together in the school cafeteria: number-crunching geeks and dreamy-eyed bohemians.

What are you doing this weekend? October 11-13

Well, the huge event of the weekend is Atlanta Pride, the celebration that started in the 1970s and just keeps getting bigger and better. The 2013 massive list of events includes parties, performances, an artists market, a Eucharist service, Lady Gaga-inspired yoga, workshops, films, a car and motorcycle show, and, of course, one hell of a parade. Jennifer Holliday wows crowd with Broadway in the Garden

About midway through her intimate Broadway in the Garden performance Sunday night at the Atlanta Botanical Garden, Tony and Grammy winner Jennifer Holliday referenced her unique surroundings. “My dressing room is over where some cultures are growing!” the Dreamgirls icon told the capacity crowd gathered in a lavishly decored tent erected on The Great Lawn. “I don’t know what they are. I’m a Broadway girl. I kept thinking about Little Shop of Horrors back there!” The Atlanta resident donated her performance Sunday night as a joint fundraiser for Actor’s Express and the Atlanta Botanical Garden.

Barry Manilow, Bruce Sussman introduce Harmony to Atlanta

Die-hard Fanilows (the self-appointed nickname for Barry Manilow fans) and skeptical, pop music schmaltz allergic Alliance Theatre veteran supporters streamed in together for the world premiere of Harmony A New Musical at the Woodruff Arts Center Sunday night. The ambitious show, composed by Grammy-winning Copacabana songwriting partners Bruce Sussman and Barry Manilow, is based on the real-life German singing group, The Comedian Harmonists, who battled to stay together (and alive) as the Nazis ascended to power in 1930s Germany.

Dad’s Garage isn’t mad at you, just disappointed

So, remember that time you had a wild party at your house and you woke up the next morning and your prized autographed photo of iconic "Brady Bunch" thespian Florence Henderson signed, "Dear Rich, 'Mom always said don't play ball in the house!' But do play ball!! Thanks & Love, Flo" was missing? OK, so that was just me. However, at last weekend's farewell bash to its longtime space on Elizabeth Street (about 400 folks showed up and a giant panda had to be ejected), some Dad's Garage fans made off with two pieces of pricey signage — the venue's new parking sign to direct patrons to parking at Bass Lofts across the street from the theater's new home at 7 Stages on Euclid Avenue and even more impressive, somehow revelers were able to sneak off with the large yellow Dad's Garage logo that once hung over the door.

Fans react to Baton Bob’s “White Lesbian Bitch” fireworks display

There were plenty of fireworks Thursday night on Atlanta street performer Baton Bob’s Facebook page. Following an altercation with a fan at the Peachtree Road Race, the city’s alleged "Ambassador of Mirth" took to his Facebook page and posted this update to fans:

CBS 46 Tony Awards blunder blows up social media, angers viewers

Monday’s forecast at CBS 46? Partly cloudy with a 100 percent chance of highly animated staff meetings. Inexplicably, on Sunday night, the Atlanta CBS affiliate decided to dump its live feed of the 67th annual Tony Awards just before the final category of the evening, Best Musical was announced and, instead, opted to air its 11 o’clock news. Compounding the insult for local theatre fans, who had just invested three hours in the live telecast from New York City’s Radio City Music Hall? Atlanta’s own Tony Award-winning Alliance Theatre had birthed Bring It On: The Musical, one of the 2013 nominees for Best Musical.

Jazz bassist Will Goble’s High Museum homecoming

In the Jazz Times review of his debut album, bassist Will Goble’s original ballad, “Blessed Unrest” is compared to classic collaborations by Stan Getz, Chet Baker and Bill Evans. Late Thursday night, Goble, 29, was attempting to articulate the compliment over the phone when his voice suddenly trails off.

With A Tony Evening, Stephanie Blank unites a pair of passions

Stephanie Blank has a secret. No, not that. Even TMZ has reported on the ridiculously civilized parting of the ways between the veteran Atlanta charitable fundraiser and her husband of 16 years, Home Depot co-founder and Atlanta Falcons owner Arthur Blank. We’re talking about a real secret here.
