For Steve Marcinko and his wife, Karen, their Breckenridge penthouse condo has been all about easy. Their two-story unit at Beaver Run has six bedrooms and sleeps 20—a mere 50 feet from one of the main chair lifts.

Technically located in Miramar Beach, Sandestin Golf and Beach Resort is often confused with a town—perhaps because of the name’s similarity to the city of Destin, located 10 miles west.

Davind and Rookmin Maharaj both grew up in Trinidad and Tobago, so they never especially craved a second home along the coast. This past spring they settled on a cabin outside Blue Ridge, less than a two-hour drive from their home in Cumming and, just as importantly, a 10-minute walk from the Toccoa River.

Not far from Wilmington, North Carolina, Bald Head Island is 12,000 acres, with 10,000 set aside for beach, marsh, and maritime forest nature preserves. There are currently 1,200 residences divided into dozens of neighborhoods.
