Captain Planet and the Planeteers, Ted Turner’s favorite cartoon series is about to soar to life as a live action flick on the big screen, thanks to Sony Pictures. The Hollywood studio is in final talks to acquire the rights to the 1990s environmental 'toon series starring the eco superhero (whose powers apparently include recycling an algae-hued “business in the front, party in the back” hairdo). The series, created by Turner and his then in house environmental team at Turner, (including Captain Planet’s mom Barbara Pyle) was an attempt to work environmental themes into an action-packed cartoon series to bring awareness to the earth’s eco challenges to the Nirvana generation.
Exactly 21 minutes into a 30-minute conversation between President Jimmy Carter, EPA administrator Lisa P. Jackson, billionaire Richard Branson and CNN founder Ted Turner at Friday night's Captain Planet Foundation gala downtown at the Georgia Aquarium, the algae-haired superhero's father smiled for the first time. Scratch that. Ted Turner was grinning from ear to ear. Not coincidentally, the 39th President of the United States sitting next to him had just endorsed the legalization of pot. Hell, Turner even sat up erect in his chair for a split second.
The woman who has cinematically seduced generations of audiences while floating through space nude in "Barbarella" knew precisely what to do Thursday night when bidding ignited over a trip to her Forked Lightning Ranch in New Mexico during the live auction at EmPower Party, the annual benefit for the Jane Fonda-founded G-CAPP at the Georgia Aquarium downtown.
At Oglethorpe University's May 12 graduation ceremony, Ted Turner received an honorary Doctor of Humane Letters degree. Below is his acceptance speech in its entirety:
As Ted Turner arrived at the Captain Planet Foundation gala private reception for major donors Friday night at the Georgia Aquarium, he made one final tweak to the fundraiser's decor. He ordered the environmental non-profit's trademark green carpet taken up and re-rolled in order to fix a potentially dangerous buckling issue on the floor. It's little wonder then when CNN's Nadia Bilchik introduced the smog-fighting cartoon character's dad to attendees at the sold-out dinner in the Oceans Ballroom, she described Turner as "media mogul, philanthropist and a guy who still picks up trash on the sidewalk."
When the live auction bidding temporarily stalled at the Atlanta premiere of Jane Fonda's new film, "Peace, Love & Misunderstanding" at Symphony Hall Tuesday night, the two-time Oscar winner and Georgia Campaign for Adolescent Pregnancy Prevention founder took to the microphone herself. On the auction block at the G-CAPP fundraiser: A five-day stay at Fonda's ex-hubby Ted Turner's 100,000-plus acre Flying D Ranch in Montana. "I know a lot about this one!" cracked Fonda as the crowd roared. "Visiting this ranch is like visiting Africa. It's bigger than metro Los Angeles. Oh, and it's got a beautiful guest house that I decorated!" The trip ended up fetching $14,500. The CNN founder's name also popped up when Fonda helped to auction off a 2012 trip to the Grammys, complete with an introduction to the now-Los Angeles resident's personal hairstylist and a hike with the Hollywood icon up to the Hollywood sign. "But it's not a bad hike," Fonda explained. "Ted would do it!" The trip went for $18,000.
In the forty years he has been in the public eye, Ted Turner has been called a genius, a jackass (by his father, among others), a visionary, childlike (a compliment), childish (not a compliment), a pioneer, a young maverick, an old lion, a straight shooter, egomaniacal, steadfast, restless, haunted, mercurial, brilliant, impatient, impetuous, insecure, generous, genuine, loyal, and cheap. Also nuts.
