Take off in Dallas, land in Jackson, Mississippi: a five-hour flight with a pit-stop for food in Monroe, Louisiana. Compared to today’s standard one-hour flight or six-hour drive, five hours in the air seems excessive (or just completely ridiculous) and only worth it to avoid traffic headaches.

If everything had gone according to schedule, we’d all have been riding the Atlanta Streetcar for months now. While the start date for the light rail system is still uncertain, the track, stops, and other infrastructural elements are in place. To promote the (eventual) launch of the system, the City of Atlanta and Central Atlanta Progress are hosting a 5K race along the route this Saturday. The race is sponsored by Siemens, the manufacturer of the streetcars that will (eventually) glide through downtown Atlanta.

Nearly a decade ago, Evelyn Lowery, Juanita Abernathy, and Andrew Young met with then mayor Shirley Franklin to officially launch a project that civic leaders had been dreaming about for far longer. That vision comes to life this month as the Center for Civil and Human Rights opens its doors.

The much-anticipated, long-delayed Atlanta Streetcar won’t be cranking to life until August—at the earliest. But fourteen pop-up shops along the route are launching into gear tomorrow.

Cheers, Atlanta, we’ve made it halfway through the year, and we’re so close to the official start of summer we can taste it. This weekend offers up everything we love about summertime—sports, music, cars, butterflies, and lawyers with guitars. (Okay, that last one might not be as conventionally beloved.)
