Ted Turner, Atlanta’s beloved, inimitable “Captain Outrageous” and “the Mouth from the South,” died on May 6. The visionary CNN founder, Atlanta Braves owner, environmentalist, philanthropist, yachtsman, humanitarian, restaurateur, 1977 America’s Cup winner and Time magazine’s 1991 Man of the Year was 87.

It put Atlanta on the map as a quirky treasure trove of warped creative minds. “People discovered that there was a certain flavor and taste to all of this concentration of creative people in Atlanta,” says Khaki Jones, a former Cartoon Network and Adult Swim producer who now works at Disney. “That, to me, is the most magical element.”
