With the opening of Buckhead Atlanta and Alpharetta’s Avalon last year, our city saw an influx of restaurants from other markets (Oak Steakhouse, Thirteen Pies, and Le Bilboquet, to name a few). This year, however, numerous local names will expand further across the city. Here are the fifteen most anticipated restaurants for 2015.

No longer forced to ply the kids with chicken fingers, it’s time for sushi. At Umi (3050 Peachtree Road), find traditional rolls along with outside-the-bento-box experimenting with yellowtail and jalapeño. Camp out in the bar to spot visiting movie stars—like Jennifer Lawrence and Jim Carrey—staying at the St. Regis next door.

As the saying goes, you win some, and you lose some. This year we saw famed mixologists leave their longtime outposts, award-winning chefs open new “it” spots, and the restaurant community band together to help one of their own. As we welcome in the new year, we pause to take a look back at what happened in 2013.

In late 2011, Atlanta lost not one, but two of its most heralded sushi restaurants when the Kinjos brothers (Chris and Alex) closed MF Sushibar and MF Buckhead. Now, Farshid Arshid and Charlie Hendon—both frequent patrons of the MF restaurants—are hoping to bring back the same level of style and sushi with their new restaurant, Umi. Former MF Buckhead executive chef Fuyuhiko Ito will lead the kitchen, and Ito’s wife, Lisa Matsuoka Ito, will be the pastry chef.
