Food Editor, Atlanta magazine
magazine is looking for our next food editor: a journalist with insatiable curiosity about one of the most fascinating food cities in America. The food editor will oversee our monthly Bite section, which includes a mix of trend stories, reviews, shorter pieces, and eye-catching visual concepts—and whatever else you think helps tell Atlanta’s full, diverse, culinary story. By “oversee” we mean conceiving (alongside our art department), assigning, editing, and writing.

The food editor also will spearhead several food-related cover packages a year, many of them with an emphasis on multimedia storytelling. Recent examples include our upcoming Takeout Issue, our Tacos Issue, our Buford Highway Issue, our Best of Atlanta Food & Drink section, our Resilience of Restaurants Issue, our Underground Dining Issue, and our 75 Best Restaurants Issue. As with the Bite section, the successful execution of these packages requires boundless creativity, ample planning, exceptional organizational skills, and clear and consistent communication with your colleagues. Most of the writers you’ll work with will be freelance contributors. You’ll also have a hand in our online-only dining coverage.

The position is called “food editor” deliberately, because our coverage spans more than restaurants and chefs—and transcends what’s on the plate to explore the intersection of food and equity, food and the environment, food and health, food and culture, and food and history. The ideal candidate will be eager to explore, explain, and expand upon our city’s and region’s evolving relationship with food—especially in these challenging times. (Though this job is not a “remote” position, our staff is currently working remotely and will likely retain some flexibility after the pandemic. We’ll be accepting applications through the end of the year.)

Successful candidates will possess:

  • At least five years of journalism experience, with two or more writing about food and dining
  • At least three years of editing experience, preferably food-related
  • Facility with all dominant forms of social media
  • Working knowledge of food trends and world cuisines
