Georgia makes history electing Keisha Lance Bottoms governor and reelecting Sen. Jon Ossoff

Georgia has elected the first Black female governor in U.S. history.

It was a history-making night: Georgia elected its first female and first Black governor. The election of Keisha Lance Bottoms also made national history: She is the nation’s first elected Black woman governor, and first Democrat to win the office since 1998. “I know I am standing on shoulders made of steel,” Bottoms said in her election-night victory speech.

Sen. Jon Ossoff barely needed the night: the Associated Press called his reelection over Republican Mike Collins at 7:55 p.m., less than an hour after polls closed. “Now our task is to reawaken that great national spirit that defeated fascism and established social security,” Ossoff said in his victory speech.

Georgia has firmly added strength to the national “blue tsunami.” In every race—including for Governor, U.S. Senate, Lieutenant Governor, Secretary of State, and Attorney General—the AP-called winner has been a democrat.

All three constitutional amendments on Georgia’s ballot passed.
