Your ever-intrepid Intel scribe was among those attending media night at the city’s scariest Halloween attraction (well, OK, outside a city council meeting), Netherworld Haunted House.
This year, the themed frights include “Gargoyle,” the main haunt, consisting of vampire lords, their nubile pointy-toothed brides and various winged creatures.
In the smaller space is “Dead Salvage: Mangler 2,” arguably the more frightening attraction, filled with rampaging zombies and deranged doctors performing all varieties of unsavory surgeries on the undead.
Throughout both attractions, ghouls drop from the ceiling, claw at you from secret passages and chase you with running gas-powered chain saws.
On Saturday night, lines for both attractions snaked through the expansive parking lot, where attendants guided cars to open spaces and monsters were waiting to pounce on the unsuspecting.
Fright fans from as far away as North Carolina and Alabama make the drive annually to the attraction.
Between scares, media types were treated to a VIP area with snacks and an open bar where Atlanta’s Red Brick Brewery beers, including Red Brick Porter and the Vortex-inspired Laughing Skull Amber Ale were being consumed by the courage-challenged.
Among those taking the spooks in stride? Channel 2 Action News reporter Tom Regan. This isn’t surprising since Regan’s line of work sometimes includes encounters with raving dentally challenged, camera-clutching individuals who chase him while threatening to let loose the hounds of hell.
Netherworld Haunted House opens nightly at 7 p.m. and is located at 6624 Dawson Blvd in Norcross.
