Gen X has been associated so closely with grunge, it’s easy to forget that we also came of age during the golden era of hip-hop. But while classic rock stations have been snatching up Pearl Jam tracks for years, there were few spots on the dial spinning Eric B. & Rakim or Slick Rick. Until recently. A year ago, three stations launched in Atlanta (one has since stopped broadcasting), capitalizing on what’s become an exploding radio format: classic hip-hop. Now, when the kids fall asleep, my husband and I switch from Pete the Cat to 102.9 or 97.9, and try to out-do each other’s recall of Positive K’s “I Got a Man.”
