Three siblings started this company in their parents’ garage more than 30 years ago. Today the California-based firm has grown to more than 50 stores nationwide dedicated to affordable accessories and furniture.
West Elm
A subsidiary of Williams-Sonoma, West Elm features contemporary furniture and accessories. Billed for its clever solutions (Plastic stemware! Coffee tables with secret panels! Corkboard wall maps!), West Elm (three locations) emphasizes clean, simple products in bright colors and designs, including bedding, rugs, tables, laundry storage, and cookware. The Atlantic Station store has also piloted collaborations with local artists and craftspeople. A Ponce City Market location, which includes a cafe and products from local makers, opened this past summer.
P. Red’s BBQ
An intown reincarnation of popular Cumming barbecue pit stop Pappy Red’s, the place sure looks the part: light brick walls, wood paneling, bric-a-brac, Coca-Cola signs, and a mounted steer’s head on the back wall. Sadly, the ‘cue—roundly mushy, lacking smoke, and, particularly in the case of pulled pork and pulled chicken, held too long—barely tastes better than the pap served at chain restaurants.
Michaela Graham
In February 2011, Graham founded the Atlanta Underground Market, a monthly pop-up food gathering featuring talented cooks and artisans—most of whom don’t operate out of a brick-and-mortar location. The feisty California transplant based her private club (which anyone can join; just sign up on her website) on similar clandestine jamborees she attended in San Francisco. Thirty to forty rotating vendors sell their dishes for a few bucks (bring cash) at each event, the location of which is announced the night before. Past sites include Sweet Auburn Curb Market and the Goat Farm, a former cotton gin factory in Westside. We’ve sampled Senegalese lamb roast, grits on a stick, stuffed beef tongue, “sushi” made of fresh fruit and white chocolate, and darling little cake pops.

Lobby Bar and Bistro
Atlantic Station’s best dining destination is a fun rendezvous in the lobby of a stylish hotel. Chef Nick Oltarsh directs the kitchen that offers modern comfort dishes.
Rosa Mexicano
The guac may be expensive ($12) at this suave, colorful restaurant in the heart of Atlantic Station, but the ingredients are tops. Food is based on traditional recipes and, at its best, can make you feel as if you were dining in Mexico City. Tacos and the monthly specials are your best bet. Pomegranate margaritas can double as dessert.
