Julie Witzel worked as a botanist at California State University in Los Angeles before becoming an interior designer, but the career switch doesn’t mean she’s left her love of nature behind. “I shudder anytime someone tries to paint wood,” she admits. “I like seeing the natural wood grain, and it’s the same with stone; I like the inherent properties of the stone to come out.” This is evident in her choices for the master bedroom—clear-coated white oak floors, a custom sliding barn door—and it makes sense of why she jumped at the chance to work on the patio. “I wanted to create this urban oasis with a garden, right in the middle of the city.”
Perhaps because of her science background, Witzel insists that every element in a room should have a function. “Extra decorative items are superfluous to me, and I think that’s why I lean more toward modern design. Your lines are cleaner, and you don’t have as much fluff.”
