In the 1960s, most decisions in Atlanta could be traced to a dozen or so business leaders who called the shots. All were men. Today, many executives are transplants to Atlanta; CEOs tend to have shorter tenures, and they exert less influence. But that also means business has become more diverse, both in staffing and scope.

Midtown Place, if you’re lucky enough to not be familiar, is that big-box shopping center across the street from Ponce City Market’s front entrance, anchored by a Whole Foods and the Home Depot. One of its lead developers, the controversial Jeff Fuqua, is best known for building such things as lifeless self-storage compounds in walkable places. Need a good laugh? Imagine telling out-of-town guests, “Hop in the car, folks—you’ve got to see Midtown Place!” Love it, hate it—endure it when necessary—you can’t say Midtown Place doesn’t work to some extent.

At a time when progressive politicians and some members of the middle class are questioning whether billionaires, however philanthropic, should even exist—and when the country and globe are on the brink of the largest catastrophe in a century or more­—can Blank give away enough of his wealth to satisfy his own desire for tzedakah—let alone society’s unprecedented need for it?

A few summers ago, as my family pulled into our Kirkwood driveway after a vacation, my yardwork addiction hit a low point. Before unloading a single boogie board or sand-dusted chair, I scurried into our front yard and yanked out a few weeds. I couldn’t stand their presence another second.

Arthur Blank turned sixty-five last September, in the middle of the worst year of his professional life. Just weeks before, Michael Vick, the marquee Falcons quarterback around whom Blank had built the team, had pleaded guilty to running a dog-fighting ring out of his home in Virginia.
