The Chai Box Cafe to open on Howell Mill, sharing Indian tradition with Atlantans
What began as a kitchen ritual passed down from generations in Monica Sunny’s family is becoming a full-fledged cafe. The Chai Box Cafe is set to open in the former Doughnut Dollies space on Howell Mill Road in November. This 625-square-foot Upper Westside shop is the first retail location for Sunny’s nationally recognized chai company—and the only dedicated Indian chai cafe in Atlanta.
With the Chai Box, Monica Sunny carries on important traditions
Monica Sunny’s life revolves around the tea. “It was the first thing my mom taught me how to make in India,” she says. “From that moment, I started experimenting on my own and combining different teas and spices to come up with my own custom blends.”
17 AAPI chefs teamed up for a fundraiser for families of the victims of the Atlanta spa shootings. It sold out in hours.
On March 16, the evening a man shot and killed eight people—six of them Asian women—at three different metro Atlanta spas, Thip Athakhanh, owner of Laotian restaurant Snackboxe Bistro, and Mia Orino, of Filipino pop-up Kamayan ATL, were at dinner. “We came home, saw the news, and were shocked about what happened. We knew we had to do something,” says Athakhanh.
