Neurotrack

An older woman slouches in the glow of a computer screen, her head steadied on a chin rest. Two identical black-and-white images appear on the screen. The screen goes blank, and then two more images appear—one the same as earlier, the other new. The woman doesn’t say a word. She doesn’t move or point. The images change again and again. After about twenty-five minutes, her session is over.

The test appears passive, but its implications are profound. A healthy person looks more closely at new images than familiar ones. If an eye-tracking camera detects that someone gazes at both old and new images equally, that could be a sign of slight damage to the hippocampus, the seahorse-shaped memory center of the brain—and a very early indicator of Alzheimer’s disease. Tracking subtle differences in eye movement forms the basis of Neurotrack, a testing system that can determine with uncanny certainty who will develop Alzheimer’s disease in the next three to six years.

“We believe we have, for the first time, been able to push back the window of discovery and predictability,” says Stuart Zola, the Emory University neuroscientist whose research led to this device. “Early detection is the holy grail for any disease.”

Finding a cure for Alzheimer’s has become an urgent mission as the U.S. population ages. No disease is more feared except cancer, yet few people have given much thought to how they would cope with progressive mental decline.

At least 200,000 Georgia residents have Alzheimer’s (and related dementia disorders), but the total is likely larger because many people have not yet been diagnosed, says Leslie Anderson, president and CEO of the Georgia chapter of the Alzheimer’s Association. “It’s a crisis that’s upon us now.”

Zola, who also is director of the Yerkes National Primate Research Center at Emory, and his colleagues want to play a part in finding a cure. They tested Neurotrack on ninety-two people—some of them with mild cognitive impairment that might progress to Alzheimer’s, and others with no known memory problems. Every person with a score below fifty on the test eventually worsened, most reaching a diagnosis of Alzheimer’s within three years. Every person with a score of sixty-seven or above was clear of the disease three years later.

For the first time, researchers can pinpoint a set of people who will develop Alzheimer’s and others who won’t, without the costly or invasive tests previously available. That is valuable information for pharmaceutical companies, who can then explore medications.

Neurotrack set up headquarters in Palo Alto, California, and recently attracted a $2 million investment, including funds from Peter Thiel, a founder of PayPal. A web-based version of the test is in development, and Neurotrack may explore ways to use the test for conditions such as Parkinson’s. Eventually, it could become widely available in doctors’ offices.
“Once we have a medication,” says Elizabeth Buffalo, a colleague of Zola’s who is now at the University of Washington in Seattle, “the hope is that this would be something like a mammogram, an early screening tool that could reduce the number of individuals who are affected by this disease.”

Caring for Atlantans Before They are Born

Babies born early or at low birth weights (less than 5.5 pounds) often face a lifetime of mental or physical challenges. The Babies Born Healthy network, organized by the United Way, includes a range of projects and partners such as the March of Dimes and the Department of Public Health. One of its efforts is the Strong Start Initiative, launched this spring by Grady Health System and the United Way to help at-risk expectant mothers. Grady, along with New Millennium Obstetrics and Gynecology and Providence Women’s Healthcare, runs a program called Centering Pregnancy that provides prenatal programs in a group setting. In a pilot, 97 percent of participating moms delivered normal-weight babies.

Texting in Braille

Visually impaired but longing to text? There’s an app for that. Georgia Tech researchers developed BrailleTouch, which lets people use a six-key Braille typing system on touchscreens. The app has helped users type more than thirty words per minute faster than other systems, says Mario Romero in Tech’s School of Interactive Computing.

Universal Flu Vaccine

The flu shot is kind of a crapshoot. Scientists create vaccines based on the flu strains they know exist, but there’s always a chance something newer will mutate. Georgia State University researcher Sang-Moo Kang is testing a universal flu vaccine so new shots won’t have to be developed all the time. The goal: protect against unexpected strains.

Helping Do-Gooders Do Right by the Planet

Nonprofits often are so busy doing good—and so strapped for cash—that eco-friendly initiatives can rank low on their priority lists. Grants to Green, a partnership of the Community Foundation for Greater Atlanta, the Kendeda Fund, and Southface, funds energy assessments and implementation awards that can help nonprofits make operational changes that save water, energy, and—vitally—cash. Between its 2008 launch and the end of 2012, Grants to Green funded assessments and awards for 136 metro area nonprofits. Grantees saved more than $1 million, and the energy savings are equal to removing 916 cars from the roads.

Computers Everywhere

At the Ubiquitous Computing Research Group at Georgia Tech, professor Gregory Abowd and his team figure out cool ways computers can help in everyday life. Abowd is particularly interested in health and home applications, such as autism detection and treatment tools, diet tracking, and computational sensors that help with home health challenges.

Wellness a la Carte

Many companies like employee wellness programs as a preventive measure: They keep workers healthy and productive and reduce overall healthcare costs. But how do you find a program that works for everyone? Or that people don’t get bored with? Without the resources of a Fortune 500 company, few employers can build their own gyms or yoga studios. Cooleaf is a concierge service that lets users pick and choose classes (kettlebell! circus arts!) and activities (healthy cooking classes, for instance). Even freelancers can get in on the action: Cooleaf’s offerings range from free individual memberships to extensive corporate-funded packages.

Healthy City Workers

As part of the City of Atlanta’s Healthier You Wellness Initiative, 500 city employees are taking part in a “Shred” weight-loss challenge. Since March, they—and 600 other employees who participate in the city’s weekly workout classes, which include line dancing, tai chi, and Zumba—have lost more than 7,500 pounds. Taking this fitness business seriously, the city also built or refurbished seven fitness centers and is one of the leading corporate Weight Watchers groups in metro Atlanta.

Selling Solar Power

Solar panels on the roof? Awesome for the environment, but hard on the wallet. Georgia Power’s Advanced Solar Initiative lets homeowners and businesses sell solar-generated energy back to the company to offset the initial investment. The plan will contract for 210 megawatts of solar by 2016, which, along with a new ASI component, will give Georgia Power the third-largest solar portfolio of any U.S. utility by 2016.

Healing the Brain

Early in his research career, Emory University neuroscientist Donald Stein realized that female rats healed more quickly from brain injuries than their male counterparts. He theorized it was due to the presence of progesterone. The hormone is now in national and international trials and, if all goes well, could become a go-to treatment for traumatic brain injuries—as well as possibly strokes and brain tumors.
