READing Paws

As soon as eight-year-old Alexandra Gutierrez kicks off her sparkly pink Hello Kitty shoes and plops down on the paw-print blanket in a back room at the Alpharetta branch of the Atlanta-Fulton Public Library, Echo the beagle settles down at her knee. With his head on his paws and his big brown eyes staring intently, Echo seems to be listening to every word of Green Eggs and Ham. He interrupts occasionally, his contented doggy sighs assuring Alexandra that he is paying rapt attention, a big fan of Dr. Seuss.

When she finishes the book, Alexandra reaches for a bag of treats and asks Echo to do some tricks. He gladly shakes hands, dances, gives a high five, and answers “Speak!” (in a library-worthy hushed bark, of course).

Echo’s most remarkable skill is not an ability to dance, but to sit patiently as children read to him. He’s a canine recruit in READing Paws, a program that pairs early readers with trained therapy dogs. The theory is brilliantly simple: Shyness, anxiety, or learning difficulties can make reading aloud in a classroom of peers traumatizing. So why not have children practice reading to dogs, who “listen” without judgment and never tease—no matter how often you might struggle with a word or accidentally miss a page? There’s science to back up this concept: A Johns Hopkins study showed that children reading alone first had elevated blood pressure, indicative of stress. With Fido on hand, however, the children were calm and their blood pressure returned to normal.

READing Paws is an affiliate of R.E.A.D. (Reading Education Assistance Dogs), a pioneering program developed by Intermountain Therapy Animals in Salt Lake City. Participating dogs and their handlers go through additional training to work with young readers. Dogs can learn to “look” at pictures, to follow as pages are turned, or to respond to prompts from their handlers, who can then interject with a little coaching: “Rover didn’t understand that last part; can you read it slower?”

The program has chapters in Georgia, Florida, Alabama, Tennessee, and Nevada (a member moved, missed the program, and started a chapter there). The Georgia READing Paws dogs and handlers hold regular sessions in libraries throughout metro Atlanta, make bookstore appearances, and work in several schools, where dogs are paired with students selected by teachers or staff for a variety of reasons. Merilee Kelley, the chairman of READing Paws, and her dog, Erica, met weekly with a girl who did not have particular trouble reading but did have trouble at home. “Her family life was so tough; the teacher realized she needed consistency somewhere, and spending time with the dog for an entire year let her build a trusting relationship she could depend on,” Kelley says.

Elaine Bryan, a Georgia Perimeter College professor, and Nellie Grace, a ninety-pound Great Pyrenees, visit Alcova Elementary School in Gwinnett County once a week—now in their third year. “It’s really great to see how they respond,” says Bryan, who works with the same students throughout a school year. “Nellie knows them and kind of gives each child what they want and need.” Some of the young readers love to lounge against the big dog as they read; one child prefers to sit formally in a chair. Bryan says she has observed steady improvement in the children’s reading skills; one student’s tests improved so much, the child moved out of the program. Bryan is looking for ways to document the results more formally.

The Georgia READing Paws corps includes more than a dozen dogs, among them retired racing greyhound Sweetie Pie, toy poodles Pearlie Mae and Chloe, and a pit bull called Nanuk. Each canine has a webpage where young fans can learn the dog’s backstory and even send emails. (If you want to chat about Dr. Seuss with Echo, it’s echo@readingpaws.org.)

ArtsBridge

“Conjunction Junction,” “Just a Bill,” and “Lolly, Lolly, Lolly,” may not qualify as high art, but when Schoolhouse Rock Live! tours next year, students from around metro Atlanta and the Southeast will be treated to the musical based on the iconic educational cartoons—as well as to the opera and ballet—through the ArtsBridge Foundation.

Since 2007, more than 240,000 students and teachers from across thirty counties in Georgia, Alabama, Tennessee, and South Carolina have been exposed to the arts thanks to ArtsBridge (formerly the Cobb Energy Performing Arts Centre Foundation). ArtsBridge arranges for free or low-cost performances at the arts center in Cobb; underwrites transportation and tuition assistance for field trips; and organizes internships, tours, and Broadway master classes.

“We know early exposure to the arts can improve academic achievement, critical thinking, and problem solving—as well as enhance social skills,” says Natalie Barrow, director of arts education and community outreach. ArtsBridge lets students “experience educational arts programs tied to the school curriculum.”

One of the most successful undertakings is the Georgia High School Musical Theatre Academy. Well before Glee became a phenomenon, the program’s Shuler Hensley Awards began encouraging teen performers.

Massive Open Online Courses

MOOCs (massive open online courses) are free classes offered by universities hoping to provide the general public with access to top professors. At Emory, MOOC topics have included Introduction to Digital Sound Design and The Addicted Brain. Kennesaw State has a MOOC introducing K-12 teachers to blended classroom and online learning. Georgia Tech offers a range of these high-tech courses, including “Control of Mobile Robots” as well as its new computing master’s degree. Some of the classes in that degree program are open only to enrolled students, but many will be free to anyone with an Internet connection by spring.

 

Vox Teen Communications

In a sunlit corner office in Peachtree Center, fifteen teens sit in a circle, brainstorming ideas for a two-day video project. “Homelessness in Downtown,” says one, who then stands to write the idea on a massive whiteboard as the rest of the group talks about how to approach the story, what they need to report on, and logistics—they have to pick locations accessible by MARTA rail. The volume builds as voices chime in. Soon, more and more hands are going up unprompted as quieter students start to feel more comfortable.

Speaking up is the point at VOX. When Rachel Alterman Wallack gathered thirteen teens and ten adult volunteers in 1993, she wanted to create a place where teen voices could be heard. Starting as a monthly newspaper, VOX Teen Communications has evolved into a multiplatform media enterprise, just like its adult counterparts. VOX is an after-school program that runs year-round, an intensive summer journalism boot camp, a website, a social media omni­presence, and yes, still the publisher of a print newspaper. VOX also developed into a youth-serving nonprofit with an extensive reach; in addition to the 100 high schoolers in the after-school program, it reaches 35,000 teens metro-wide through five issues of the paper, serves 1,000 teens through community writing and journalism workshops, and sponsors a college readiness program called Graduation Countdown.

“VOX has been one of the most impactful experiences I’ve had in my life,” says Stanley Stewart, a Ronald E. McNair High School graduate who finished the program in 2012 and is now a junior at Brown University. “It was not only a place where I developed as a writer and artist, but I developed as a leader.” While in high school, Stewart served on the VOX board; the nonprofit’s bylaws uniquely mandate that teens participate in running and planning the organization. “Allowing teens to lead the way really helped boost my confidence and helped me believe in myself,” says Stewart.

“When I first started, I was really shy,” says Manuel Portillo, seventeen, a senior at North Atlanta High School who found his way to VOX last summer and has already coordinated a special issue of the newspaper focused on bullying. “I’ve been way more focused on what I want to do.”

For Kaleb Anderson, who is learning how to be a leader at B.E.S.T. Academy, VOX meant making an adjustment. “I had to open up to other opinions,” the sixteen-year-old says. “It was really hard at first. It’s not really just my opinion that matters. I’ve learned to be more of a team player.”

VOX draws public and private school students from across the metro area and from a wide range of backgrounds; some live in Atlanta’s wealthiest neighborhoods, while others have been in the foster system or were homeless. At VOX their voices are heard equally. “It’s the only place where you get a set of diverse teens from around the city,” says Stewart.

Because its participants come from such varied backgrounds, the adult staff “try to meet each teen where they are,” says Jeff Romig, VOX’s executive director. All of the teens who take part in the year-round program graduate from high school and do so with a plan for after graduation, whether college, internships, or the military. “We’re trying to provide the resources that put teens on the path to success, whatever success may be for them.”

Emory and Georgia Tech

It’s easier to navigate Atlanta traffic than to blend the engineers of a public university with the medical researchers of a private institution. But for seventeen years, Georgia Tech and Emory have shared a joint biomedical engineering program that produces hundreds of graduates along with promising medical advances—and keeps professors and students busy crossing town between North Avenue and Druid Hills.

“We were born out of a certain bold vision that was very risky,” says Ravi V. Bellamkonda, chair of the Wallace H. Coulter Department of Biomedical Engineering, who has offices and labs on both campuses. But risk has paid off: The graduate biomedical engineering program is ranked second in the nation by U.S. News & World Report and attracts about $20 million annually in federal research grants. Today the program enrolls more than 1,360 undergraduates (three-fourths of whom conduct lab research) and 200 graduate students and involves twenty-seven faculty at Georgia Tech, seven at Emory, and more to be hired.

Connecting talent and resources on the two campuses has led to innovation and marketable new devices, leveraging Tech’s engineering prowess and Emory’s medical expertise.

“Wherever technology meets medicine, a biomedical engineer is involved in some shape or form,” says Bellamkonda. For example, Erika Tyburski developed a simple, color-based test for anemia when she was a senior at Georgia Tech. Now she’s working with pediatric hematologist and oncologist Wilbur Lam, an assistant professor at Emory and Tech and staff specialist at Egleston children’s hospital, on a startup that will produce and market an inexpensive at-home device. The joint program has led to the country’s only center for pediatric nanomedicine. “Our institutions are aligned to bring the best technology to the bedside,” says Lam.

Of course, there are mundane issues to contend with in a collaboration across academic bureaucracies. There is extra paperwork as the two universities jointly compete for research grants. The department has offices and labs on both campuses.
And because this is in Atlanta, there’s a traffic issue: Parking fees have to cover both universities.

The Center for Civil and Human Rights

Almost a decade ago, the Center for Civil and Human Rights was conceived to underscore the relevance of the midcentury American civil rights movement to contemporary political and humanitarian struggles. Commendably, the organizers stuck with that vision. It would have been so much easier—especially in a city that loves to gloss over unpleasantness—to celebrate past victories and Atlanta’s vaunted role in that chapter of U.S. history, wrapping everything up with a neat self-congratulatory bow and talk of strides made, rather than steps that remain. But the $65 million facility, which opened in June, emphasizes ongoing global struggles and unresolved issues at home.

Two major exhibition areas meet in a central atrium, showing how the past and present intersect. One takes visitors on an emotionally harrowing walk through Jim Crow segregation, lunch counter demonstrations, the March on Washington, the Birmingham bombing, the assassination of Martin Luther King Jr., and the stories of the movement’s less famous foot soldiers. The other gallery provides an overview of global tyranny and oppression, including historic figures like Hitler, Stalin, and Pol Pot, along with a real-time map of levels of global freedom (and lack of it).

Walking through the historic displays, you hear the refrain of “We shall overcome.” When you reach the modern exhibition, you realize the importance of the final words of that song: “some day.”

IS3D Educational Software

Clark the calf is seriously ill.

As he lies on the ground, his head jerks in a seizure. It’s up to Denice Esterly’s biology class at the Walker School in Marietta to save his life.

The cure involves osmosis, in which water molecules pass across a permeable cell membrane—a concept they have just learned about. Step by step, they discover that Clark needs a saline solution to coax excess water out of his brain and into his blood vessels. Moments after the solution is administered, the calf is sitting up, enjoying his handler’s strokes between his ears.

The students aren’t in a barn but are observing Clark by video and diagnosing him using an interactive case study created by IS3D, an educational software startup that originated at the University of Georgia. The company’s programs use video, animation, and real-life examples to help students understand ideas like osmosis, diffusion, and filtration.

IS3D (Interactive Science in 3-D) grew out of the frustration of UGA veterinary school professors, who felt students needed a better understanding of cell biology. They partnered with Casey O’Donnell, a Michigan State anthropologist who studies and designs games, and the result was powerful. “It’s hard to visualize what the inside of a cell looks like,” says Tom Robertson, CEO of IS3D and an associate professor of physiology and pharmacology. “If you can show them that world, they can learn much more quickly about these biological pathways.”

A $1.3 million grant from the National Institutes of Health enabled IS3D to develop case studies that boost the critical-thinking and problem-solving skills of high school students. Further funding from NIH, the National Science Foundation, and the Georgia Research Alliance, along with input from teachers, is allowing IS3D to create a suite of ten case studies, interactive guides, and texts.

The software allows teachers to track students as they move through the case studies and intervene if students struggle with a particular concept.

A similar program is being developed for elementary and middle school students. The products will be available commercially as Cogent Education.

Technology and real-world stories are just the way to engage today’s device-dependent students, says Esterly. “You can see the look on their faces if they did the wrong thing and Clark has a seizure,” she says. “They want to go back and fix it and save Clark. They care about that cow.” (Note: No cattle were harmed to make the video. At the end, students learn that Clark’s “seizures” were actually created by shaking the calf’s rump while someone filmed the movement of his head.)

Atlanta Shakespeare Company

Saying they are “saving the world through iambic pentameter,” the Atlanta Shakespeare Company heads to two high schools in the Atlanta Public Schools system each spring, offering intensive after-school performance residencies for eight weeks. The Total Access Shakespeare program lets students act or work on costumes, publicity, or stage management.

 

 

Community Guilds’ STE(A)M truck

With all the focus on STEM education, one piece seems to be missing: training for kids who might not work in labs but want to do something hands-on. Community Guilds cuts to the chase (literally) by traveling to schools in the STE(A)M truck, tricked out with scientific and artistic equipment—including a 3-D printer. Apprenticeships are also available for high school students to refine skills.

 

Odyssey

Census data shows that Atlanta has a greater divide between wealthy and poor households than any major U.S. city. Here’s just one example of how those stats translate in real life: Children in some of Atlanta’s wealthiest families attend the Westminster Schools, where tuition tops out at $24,435, and the 180-acre campus resembles an Ivy League college more than a K-12 school. Meanwhile, in the Atlanta Public Schools system, 75 percent of students qualify for free or reduced lunch, and ninety-three of the 105 learning sites meet the government’s “Title 1” qualification as serving disadvantaged students.

Odyssey, a summer enrichment program for APS students hosted at Westminster’s verdant campus, bridges some of those gaps, giving students a chance to get ahead before the school year commences. Nine years in, Odyssey presents strong results: Students who participate during the summer show gains in math, science, and reading scores, while peers who do not attend summer programs are likely to lose skills during the break.

Peeking into Odyssey classrooms, it’s clear that this summer camp–summer school hybrid gets results through hard work disguised as serious fun. In Robinson Hall, Westminster’s tricked-out science facility, rising eleventh graders edit a movie they wrote and produced while ninth graders brainstorm ways to advertise the games they spent weeks coding. Sixteen-year-olds troubleshoot half-finished robots, referring to their math notes to get the calculations just right. In another room, students read The House on Mango Street to prepare for a discussion on breaking barriers and going to college. Seventh-graders participate in an immersive CSI experience, using math and science to solve a crime, producing investigative journalism to report on it, and taking the case to “court.”

Odyssey is designed to capture the interest of students who might benefit from a nudge in the right direction, not those who struggle the most. “We are looking for that B student,” says director Jeff Cohen. “We want high-potential kids from the middle third of their class.”

Odyssey teachers come from APS and Westminster, as well as from surrounding districts, providing students with a mix of perspectives and giving teachers a chance to compare best practices between very different schools. Westminster high school students serve as volunteers and assistant teachers in the elementary school program.

Through grants and donations from private foundations, businesses, and individuals, as well as support from APS, Odyssey provides transportation, breakfast, lunch, and supplies for 300 participants. Students, in turn, are held to high standards: Those who miss more than three days over the program (six weeks for elementary and middle schoolers, five for high school students) are asked to leave. “That’s not usually a problem we see,” says development director Tara Sweeney. “Kids want to be here.”

Odyssey’s motto is “A quest for knowledge, a path to college.” Beginning with reading skills in first grade, this mantra is adhered to until seniors have visited college campuses, taken practice ACTs and SATs, and written their college essays. For this year’s graduating seniors, the road map to college was clear: 100 percent were accepted to an institution of higher learning.
