Each Makes Cakes_cupcakesRach Makes Cakes will open its first brick-and-mortar location in the Ponce Springs Lofts, across the street from Ponce City Market, late this fall. Serving custom-ordered cakes, as well as cupcakes and cake pops made daily, it will be primarily a grab-and-go spot with communal seating in the courtyard outside.

Owner and baker Rachael Hill has been making custom cakes out of a commercial kitchen in Woodstock since 2013, but this will be her first time offering individual servings.

“After high school, I wanted to go to culinary school but my mom thought I would hate it,” she says. “As a trick, she signed me up for a cake-decorating class. It was love at first piping bag.”

Hill makes a lot of wedding and kids’ birthday cakes and describes her style as “cartoony.“ At the new location, she’ll offer five rotating flavors of cupcakes and cake pops daily. These may include almond cake with raspberry filling, cinnamon cake with cinnamon buttercream, red velvet, chocolate buttercream, and vanilla on vanilla. She offers a gluten-free red velvet cake and a vanilla vegan cake as well. “I love cake. It’s fun, and I want it to be fun for other people as well,” she says.

The new space will feature an L-shaped counter, possibly with white subway tiles and a cake-related mural painted by a local artist on the back wall.
