As the Beltline prepares to open segments 2 and 3 of the Southside Trail, workers have been clearing trees and shrubs to pave future paths. Instead of just turning these plants into woodchips, they’ve been given a second life as food for animals at Zoo Atlanta. Known as browse, these fresh branches and leaves nourish animals across the zoo, from goats to giraffes.

The city’s purchase of the Southside Trail land is a huge deal for the Atlanta BeltLine

On Thursday, Atlanta Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms will announce that the city and Atlanta BeltLine Inc. have struck a $25.8 million deal with CSX to purchase the 4.5-mile segment that will become the BeltLine Southside Trail. The unused railroad corridor stretches past Grant Park and Chosewood Park and, once the construction of a bike path is complete, will connect the Westside and Eastside Trails.
