In the ’90s, when I was new to Atlanta, I found my way to the Atlanta Cuban Club in Doraville. It was a place to eat, dance, and listen to stories of life in Cuba before the Castro Revolution. But five years ago, the club closed its doors. Now, without the Cuban Club to guide us, we’ve kept our roots alive the way we know best: through food. There’s a growing network of Cuban Atlantans crisscrossing the city like detectives on a hot trail, chasing down leads.

For Atlanta’s intrepid diners, there’s more to finding hidden gems than veering off the beaten path, though that certainly adds to the intrigue. The challenge is in uncovering food treasures. We set out to find lesser-known destinations, from obscure restaurants and takeout shacks to underground bars, food trucks, and gas station finds.

The half moon–shaped pastries originated in Spain but took on local flavors and ingredients as they spread throughout Latin America. Typically the size of your palm, they’re perfect for quelling midday hunger pangs.
