The pandemic throttled local restaurants. At the same time, it revealed how much we rely on them, for reasons far beyond sit-down dining.
The “village” part of this neighborhood’s moniker (aka EAV) isn’t just a cutesy realtor-invented label. This diverse, walkable pocket of the city exudes a small-town feel while boasting distinctly urban offerings, from hipster-filled tattoo parlors and late-night bars to flower shops.
Mihoko Obunai, a chef who came to local prominence after opening the now-defunct Repast with then-husband Joe Truex, will begin making ramen at So Ba in East Atlanta the second week in September. Obunai's most recent gig was a short-lived stint as executive chef at Joli Kobe Bakery & Cafe.
Today, Octopus Bar turns one year old and, if chef Angus Brown has his way, the anniversary party will be well worth being closed Tuesday night to recover. One year has passed since the East Atlanta Village Vietnamese restaurant, So Ba, began the nightly transition into an after-hours destination. “It happened so fast, and seemed so right,” Brown says of his serendipitous partnership with owner Nhan Le.
