Atlanta’s 10 Best Steakhouses: Arnette’s Chop Shop

A hideaway worth finding

In Atlanta, steakhouses don’t typically go incognito. But Arnette’s, tucked into a reclaimed warehouse on a Brookhaven side street, is rebelliously discreet. It was a departure for owner Michel Arnette, who had already opened three other Brookhaven restaurants (Haven, Valenza, and Vero) on busy Dresden Drive before unveiling Arnette’s in 2018. But once you manage to find the place and open its heavy front door, it reveals its flashy side.

To the right, stairs framed with sculptural “bones” (made to resemble the ribs of a steer) lead to a bar lined with colorful portraits of rock-and-roll icons such as David Bowie, Mick Jagger, and Jimi Hendrix. You can dine in the bar or simply order a cocktail (try a Manhattan made with the restaurant’s private barrel Knob Creek rye) and return to the first floor, which offers a more refined experience in the wood-and-leather dining room.

Start with one of the restaurant’s wood-grilled seafood dishes, perhaps oysters topped with garlic butter and parmesan crumbs, or splurge on an order of Astrea Schrenkii caviar. Arnette’s has a special focus on dry-aged steaks, including a cowboy rib eye aged 35 days for maximum tenderness. For a side, don’t overlook the onion rings: They arrive fried to crispy perfection with homemade ranch for dipping. The Instagram-worthy dessert is the eye-popping Chop Shop sundae, a huge bowl of ice cream surrounded by toppings such as M&Ms, sprinkles, nuts, and chocolate sauce. Arnette’s may start off incognito, but it knows how to end with a bang.
