Atlanta 2040: What life will look like in the city’s third century

Cancer won’t be deadly

Therapies targeted directly at the mutations causing cancer, less invasive surgery, and more precise radiation are all getting better results already. The Emory Proton Center in Midtown will put Atlanta among a handful of cities around the country with the ability to deliver such precise treatment. An amazing breakthrough is teaching the immune system itself to attack cancer, which is creating a whole new class of therapies. More people will be living with cancer like a chronic disease, the same way people live with high blood pressure or diabetes.
