If you’re staying in town this Memorial Day weekend, you’ll find a lot more happening than just picnics and barbeques. Take in some jazz, travel back in time with Dr. Who, or even sip a beer with Mei Lun and Mei Huan. The possibilities are endless.

Atlanta Jazz Festival
What better setting than Piedmont Park for one of the country’s largest free jazz events? We repeat: three days. Free. Friday through Sunday. atlantafestivals.com

Salute the Troops
Memorial Day at Stone Mountain means remembering those who served and are serving with free concerts, fireworks, and, of course, a laser show. Saturday through Monday. stonemountainpark.com

Military Timeline
The Atlanta History Center offers family-friendly lessons on everything from the American Revolutions all the way up to current conflicts. Events include weapon firing demonstrations, veteran talks, a civil war encampment, and more. Saturday, 11 a.m. atlantahistorycenter.com

Atlanta Caribbean Carnival
If you can’t be on an island, at least celebrate island culture with a parade, music, and enough food to send you looking for a beach to pass out on. Multiple events, Thursday through Sunday; Parade and festival village, Saturday. atlantacarnival.org

Brew at the Zoo
You can spend Saturday night drinking in a dark, loud bar, or you can spend it sampling unlimited beer and wine in a place that has baby pandas. We think the choice is obvious. Saturday, 5:30 p.m. zooatlanta.org

Zombie Run 5K
Nothing motivates you to beat your best running time more than being chased by a horde of zombies. (Note: The undead at this event move much faster than those “walkers” on a certain television show.) Saturday, morning race: 9:30 a.m.; evening race: 9 p.m. thezombierun.com

Design for Social Impact
This Museum of Design Atlanta show explores how architects, engineers, and others are using industrial design to address social problems like drought, famine, and displacement. Sunday through August 3. museumofdesign.org

Decatur Arts Festival
Because Decatur isn’t an artsy enough place the rest of the year, its historic square is filled with hundreds of booths showcasing work by artists from around the region. ArtWalk kickoff, Friday; Art show and other events, Saturday and Sunday. decaturartsfestival.com

TimeGate
Organizers of this upcoming convention, celebrating time travel sci-fi like Doctor Who and Stargate, assure us that the event was spectacular. At the Holiday Inn Select Atlanta-Perimeter/Dunwoody. Friday through Sunday. timegatecon.org

MomoCon
If anime and video games are more your nerd fancy, this annual convention hosts cosplay costume contests, gaming tournaments, a dance party, and more. Friday through Sunday. momocon.com
