In the rich red clay of Georgia, long before Atlanta earned its reputation as the “City Too Busy to Hate,” the seeds of Black mobility and viability were planted. Esteemed institutions like Morehouse, Spelman, Morris Brown College, Clark College, and Atlanta University attracted talented Black minds from across the African diaspora to Atlanta. Just as the converging rail lines of Terminus brought economic development to the area, the Atlanta University Center has served as a vital artery for Black cultural, political, and spiritual growth.

With hundreds of credits, including OutKast and Goodie Mob’s debut albums Southernplayalisticadillacmuzik and Soul Food, TLC’s “Waterfalls,” and En Vogue’s “Don’t Let Go (Love),” Rico Wade helped to expand Atlanta’s imprint in music, reaching global heights. With OutKast and Goodie Mob, Wade was part of mainstreaming Southern hip-hop, expanding its boundaries and perimeters.

The African Diaspora Art Museum of Atlanta’s north star is exploring and advancing conversations around contemporary Black art and culture through exhibitions, programs, and artist residencies.

Currently located at Uptown Atlanta (formerly Lindbergh City Center), the Art Lab is a gallery and studio space spread across four connected buildings totaling 18,000 square feet.

Fahamu Pecou has come back from tragedy to host a solo show at Emory’s Michael C. Carlos Museum, Justin Timberlake is coming to State Farm Arena, and Atlanta is celebrating what would have been Martin Luther King Jr.'s 90th birthday.

Atlanta artist Fahamu Pecou was vacationing in Cuba, on his way to a market, when he stopped at one of Havana’s many Wi-Fi parks to check his text messages. As soon as he was able to connect, his phone lit up one alarming message after another. “Call me right away, it’s an emergency.”

You should be so lucky to get an invitation to dinner at the Pecous’. Jamila Crawford Pecou—a vegan for 25 years—has cooked for Dave Chappelle, Erykah Badu, and André 3000. Fahamu Pecou, who received his Ph.D. from Emory University’s Institute for the Liberal Arts in May, explores black male identity through the prism of fine art.
