Tim Heidecker, lauded comedian from hit shows like Tim and Eric: Awesome Show, Great Job! and films like Bridesmaids, Us, and Mister America, will perform songs from his new album, Slipping Away, at Terminal West February 17.

Slipping Away feels like a slight departure from previous albums, which, while featuring some serious themes and songs, focused on wrapping them in a comedic bow. Slipping Away is poignant and different, like a time capsule from the seventies that somehow weaves in the sadness of today’s socio-cultural issues with effervescence and lightness. Issues like the unhoused crisis are on display in beautifully tender songs like “Hey, Would You Call My Mom For Me?” and topics like death and time are the focus of songs like “Something Somewhere” and  “Bells Are Ringing.”

“I think it’s obviously the most profound concept to hold onto as we go through life,” Heidecker says of death. “I realized this very recently, and I think it applies to music as well: By playing with it, by singing about it, by talking about it, by making fun of it, you’re coming to terms with it, and you’re taking the mystique or the fear and the anxiety around it away. Instead of letting it burn a hole in the back of my head, let’s goof about it, let’s talk about it. I think it’s very healthy to do that.”

He says he isn’t bothered by the album’s shift in tone from previous ones he’s released and what that might say about him. “Identity is never really accurate and it changes. It’s not something I try to worry about, I just try to make stuff. In the case of a record, I want that record to be moving, enjoyable, and a reflection of what I’m thinking about. As far as my identity goes, I hope people think, ‘He’s a person that makes interesting things: Sometimes they’re fun and sometimes they’re not.’”

Heidecker says he has a special fondness for Atlanta. “I’ve actually been coming to Atlanta since 2004 or so with Eric, doing some of the Tim and Eric shows. Atlanta is also the home of Adult Swim, so it used to be very much like a big destination for us. A lot of people from the network would come to our shows and it felt like an important place. Atlanta is very much an important city to me. I have a lot of good feelings about going down there. We’re looking forward to the show, I think it’s always a good time, and we’ve got a whole new set. I’m also going to be doing some stand-up comedy during the show, so by the time we get to Atlanta, we’re gonna be nice and warmed up and ready to go.”
