The coffee shop resides in a blink-and-you-might-miss-it strip mall at 4448 Tilly Mill Road, near the intersection of Peachtree Boulevard. The name refers to the refuge that coffee shops provide. “As we were building in 2020, that's what we wanted the space to be,” says co-owner Priscilla Wells. “And now even more so when people are still getting used to being out again and finding community all over, it means so much more now to us to know that it's a place of refuge for our local community.”

Mend Coffee & Goods is designed to be a place for the inter-ability community to convene, work, and socialize. It comes from Jay and Katherine Wolf, the founders of disability nonprofit Hope Heals, and will serve Opo coffee drinks—think espresso, drip, nitro, cold brew lattes—and kombucha on tap, plus breakfast and pastries.

Rahel TafarI purchased the building at 337 Georgia Avenue (formerly Mindpower marketing), more than doubling her original space. This will enable her to expand Grant Park Coffeehouse’s menu and offer table service, a first for the business. “I’m so excited and ready to get back to my neighborhood,” she says.

While Valor Coffee owner Riley Westbrook hopes that the vibe will be similar to the downtown Alpharetta original, which opened in 2019, the Dunwoody location is about three times bigger and will have ample seating to match.

Tucked away among the homes just north of Marietta Square, walk-up coffee shop Sessions Stand offers espresso, danishes, whole wheat croissants, even bouquets of flowers.

This spot has strong Wi-Fi, live music, tasty Bloody Marys and pimento cheese sandwiches, and the best craft brew selection on the island.

Some independents rely on the personality of their baristas, the quality of their furniture, the ease of their Internet connections, and the extent of their merchandising. Many pride themselves on having better, more ethical beans. But what distinguishes a newcomer in the Emory Village, a place so focused and so good that some coffee nerds are waving bye-bye to their usual haunts, is primarily a technique.
