Meet the Other Mayors: Vince Williams, Union City

On the Hollywood of the South’s arrival, Shannon Mall, and his Memphis roots

Williams says Union City’s slogan, “You’ll like what U.C.,” has been particularly true for companies like Amazon and Keurig, as well as key players in Georgia’s film and TV industry, who’ve recently brought jobs to this South Fulton city of 23,400. By day, Williams is an associate minister. As a part-time mayor, he earns $14,000 a year.

Enter Tinseltown We were able to snag a relationship with 404 Studio Partners, and now we have the Atlanta Metro Studios [scheduled to open in the former Shannon Mall this spring]. We have folks from Hollywood coming in every week to visit the site.

Mall redevelopment The old Shannon Mall was visited by many folks who said, “We want it to be a mall [again].” Well, that model of a mall is dead.

Bluff City roots I was born and raised in Memphis, and had a great career in the music industry and as a political consultant. Believe it or not, I was a performer and a writer. Then Prince started taking his clothes off, and I said, “It’s time for me to exit!”
