Containment, airing midseason on the CW, is a new apocalyptic show set in Georgia. We know you might be a little burnt out those, but trust us, this one’s different. There are no zombies, supernatural monsters, or any otherworldly forces at play. Instead, Containment centers on a good ol’ fashioned lethal viral outbreak and a massive quarantine. People trapped on both sides of the wall must try to survive, maintain order, and find a cure before anarchy runs amuck.
Since the show is not only filmed here but also set in town, there will be a lot of nods to Atlanta that residents will pick up on. A few things that stood out to us in the new trailer:
Avondale MARTA Station
Our first glimpse into Containment’s Atlanta, at 0:30, is the Avondale MARTA station. Best of all, that’s an actual MARTA-branded train in the scene. Oftentimes shows change the names of real agencies for legal reasons. For example, take a look at this still from an episode of Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D set in Atlanta.
Still, you can’t call the Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. production design team lazy; there’s an actual MARTA map in the background, and they used the proper font and colors. We’re just happy that for Containment, MARTA allowed the show to use its branding for that extra bit of realism.
The Carnegie Monument
A lot of the trailer’s nighttime action (2:03 and continuing at 2:11) was shot near the Carnegie Monument inside Hardy Ivy Park, off Baker and Peachtree streets downtown. It just so happens we were in the area when the pilot was filming and caught an up-close look at the action. This spot appears to be one of the edges of the quarantine zone.
The New ITP/OTP
If you pause at just the right second (2:10), you can see a map of the cordoned off “containment” area, which encompasses most of the Old Fourth Ward. Everything seems to be radiating outward from Atlanta Medical Center, renamed Atlanta Midtown Hospital in the show. Take a look at the access points—they’re all correctly named for the actual streets.
Atlanta City Hall
City leaders ominously promise that “this will be over before it begins” during a press conference filmed inside Atlanta City Hall (2:15), but we have a feeling they’re wrong about that, since there’s also a shot directly outside (1:50), and we ran into yet another press conference being filmed during production.
Edgewood Avenue
All of those soldiers, shipping containers, and frantic, screaming citizens seen toward the trailer’s end (Starting at 2:42) were filmed on Edgewood Avenue between Jackson Street and Boulevard. A crewmember we spoke with on location confirmed that this will be another edge of the quarantine zone. This part of town isn’t locked down according to the map, so we’re not sure if the area will expand during the show or if it’s just a case of artistic license. (We’re actually wondering the same thing about the Carnegie Monument shots.) Either way, expect this to be an explosive scene judging from the guns, biohazard bags, and burnt-out (MARTA?) bus.
Fun fact: If you check out Edgewood on Google Maps, you can see another film crew from October 2014, most likely Constantine based on the timing, setting up across from Georgia Justice Project.
Containment, starring Claudia Black, David Gyasi, Chris Wood, and Elyse Levesque, will premiere midseason on the CW.
