A Zoo Atlanta vet wishes a fond farewell to the giant pandas he worked with for 25 years
Zoo Atlanta has announced that the four pandas currently residing at the habitat—parents Lun Lun and Yang Yang and children Ya Lun and Xi Lun—will leave mid-month, as the contract between Zoo Atlanta and China expires. While the zookeepers hope to get new pandas in the future, nothing is planned yet. In the meantime, the zoo staff is doing all they can to help Atlantans get their panda fix.
A love letter to Zoo Atlanta’s pandas
In August 2016, my oldest daughter, Vivien, started kindergarten at Parkside Elementary School in Grant Park, just a few blocks down the street from Zoo Atlanta. The school—which opened in 2001, shortly after the arrival of the zoo’s first giant pandas, Lun Lun and Yang Yang, in 1999—adopted the iconic creature as a mascot. Since then, seven pandas have been born at the zoo, with the youngest, a pair of twins, born just a month after Vivien started school.

Zoo Atlanta’s panda twins celebrate their first birthday
Happy birthday, Mei Lun and Mei Huan! One year ago today, pandemonium began when Zoo Atlanta's giant panda Lun Lun gave birth to a set of tiny pink cubs, the first giant panda twins born in the U.S. since 1987. Through the zoo's blog, eager Atlantans (and the rest of the world) watched the twins transform from four-ounce newborns to the 60-pound adorable balls of fluff they are today, along the way hitting classic milestones such as opening their eyes for the first time and getting their baby teeth. Today, the zoo celebrates the girls’ birthday with a set of ice cakes, but let’s first go back in time and look at how far these cuties have come.
