In 2012 more than 6,600 people applied for 138 first-year positions at Emory, which trains residents and fellows in ninety-four programs. Based in Augusta, the state’s public medical school has campuses and branches throughout the state and a second four-year campus in Athens. Mercer University School of Medicine
This school was established in 1982 to educate professionals to meet the healthcare needs of underserved areas of Georgia. More than 60 percent of graduates currently practice in-state, most in rural or underserved areas. Mercer opened a four-year Savannah campus in 2008 and in 2012 began offering clinical education for third- and fourth-year medical students in Columbus. Founded in 1975 in Atlanta as a two-year program at Morehouse College, the Morehouse school has clinical training affiliations with several established medical schools.
