Before opening her new restaurant in Decatur in May, owner Belén de la Cruz was already known as Atlanta’s reigning “empanada queen,” with an empire of eponymous shops selling her popular empanadas and pastries. Now, Cruz expands beyond empanadas. Her savory turnovers feature prominently on the menu and in the mini “market” near the entrance.

Belen Bistro + Market is now open in Decatur Square. Although the bistro will serve empanadas as an appetizer, they will be fried, rather than baked as they are at Belén de la Cruz. Other menu items include ravioli (ham and cheese, butternut squash, or spinach), baked brie with a honey crust, and beet salad with hardboiled egg and Greek yogurt.

Soon after co-owners Ean Camperlengo and Ross Winecoff opened Mothers Best Fried Chicken last December, they were slammed, with lines out the door to Church Street. In a struggling restaurant world full of misses, they’d managed to score a hit.
